How to choose the Best Halong Bay Day Trips from Hanoi?

Choose the right tour That Fits Your Interest and Budget

There are plenty of options for the Halong Bay Day cruise from Hanoi. It really depends on your budget and interest. If you enjoy privacy, you can consider a private tour. You can book a smaller boat, which can both save you some money and give you more privacy.

Most day cruises focus on sightseeing and cave explorations. If you want additional activities such as swimming and kayaking, you can choose the cruise that has that feature.

Choosing the tour that include transfer on expressway

As everything squeezes in a short time, I recommend taking a tour that offers shuttle transfer on the expressway to reduce time traveling on the road and have more time on the cruise. It is only around 2.5 hours on the expressway compared to 4 hours on regular roads.

Choose the right duration for Halong Bay Day Cruise

The popular durations for a day cruise are 4 hours, 6 hours, and 8 hours. Shorter cruises are generally cheaper, but the longer ones offer more time for explorations. If you take a day trip from Hanoi, I recommend taking the 4-6 hours cruise for the best experience.

Taking a 7-8 hour day cruise when traveling from Hanoi can make for a long day, while the shorter cruise will allow more time for relaxation after the trip.

Choose the best time to visit Halong Bay

The best time to visit Halong Bay is from March to April and October to November. These months have stable weather, dry, and little rain. You can enjoy sightseeing, cave explorations, visiting floating villages, and enjoy outdoor activities like swimming, kayaking, and hiking.

The rainy season is from May to October, so be mindful if you are visiting Halong Bay or North Vietnam during these months as typhoons and storms can happen and interrupt your travel plan. Be sure to regularly update the weather forecast during this period to keep you safe.

If you are visiting Halong Bay in winter from December to February, you can have cold and dry weather. It offers a more relaxing experience with little chance of heavy rain and storms. But there will be many misty days that are foggy and affect the visibility.

Considering stay overnight in Halong City or Cat Ba island

For a more relaxing cruise experience, you can consider staying overnight in Halong City or Cat Ba island, then book a day cruise to the bay. This will reduce time traveling on the road between Hanoi and Halong Bay.

Halong City, particularly the area around Bai Chay and Hon Gai has many accommodations for all budgets. Domestic travelers are indeed like staying in a hotel in the city then taking a day cruise.

Cat Ba island is a beautiful island to explore where you can visit caves, beaches, and experience local life. From here, you can easily find a cheap day cruise to either Lan Ha Bay or Halong Bay. Many cruises from here will provide activities such as rock climbing, swimming, and kayaking.

Halong Bay day trip itinerary

Halong Bay

The itinerary of Halong Bay day trip from Hanoi is quite similar between tour agencies and cruise companies. Generally, a Halong Bay day trip will include a pick up from Hanoi in morning, check in cruise around 12pm, sightseeing for 4 hours, back to the port around 5pm, then return to Hanoi at night.

In the early morning, the tour company will pick you up at your hotel in the old quarter around 7.30 to 8am. You can also organize your own transport by taking a bus or private transfer, then meeting a tour guide at Halong port, but I recommend taking the tour’s shuttle service.

This is because Tour shuttles will take you directly to the port and ensure you arrive on time. This way is less stressful than coordinating your own transport.

You’ll arrive at Tuan Chau Maria around 12pm. If you take the expressway between Hanoi and Halong, it will be 2.5 hours on the bus. Taking the expressway is more expensive but is the fastest way to get to the bay, reducing time on the road. It is recommended when you take a day trip to Halong Bay.

Depending on your tour you booked, the cruise provides some basic lunch on board. It will stop at a couple of attractions for you to explore such as Ti Top Island and Sung Sot Cave.

The Hanoi Halong Bay day trip usually ends around 9pm when the shuttle bus drops you at your Hotel in Hanoi old quarter.
