Ho Chi Minh City has two distinct seasons including the rainy season (monsoon season) and the dry season. It is known for its tropical climate with hot weather throughout the year whether it is the dry or rainy season.
Dry Season and Rainy Season in Ho Chi Minh City:
Dry season (December to April). The city has warm, sunny weather with an average temperature around 33°C, little rain and low humidity. You can pack a bottle of water, hats, airy clothing, and sunscreen with you. You should avoid going out at noon, especially in the hottest months (April) to avoid heatstroke.
Rainy season (May to November). The city experiences heavy rainfall, high humidity, and occasional thunderstorms. Be aware of severe storms and floods in September and October.
The rain can be heavy and usually comes and goes in a short time, then the sky becomes clear and blue. Rain mostly occurs in the afternoon, so you can enjoy outdoor activities in the morning. Remember to carry raincoast, waterproof jacket, or umbrella when going out.
When is the best time to visit Ho Chi Minh City?

The best time to visit is between December and April because it is the dry season, so you can enjoy a lot of outdoor activities without worrying about the rain. You can explore many cultural/ historical attractions, go shopping, enjoy the nightlife, and take day trips to Mekong delta or Cu Chi Tunnels.
Despite the weather conditions, the moon season is the best time to visit Ho Chi Minh City on a budget and to avoid tourist crowds. You can book cheap flights and stay in good hotels with lower prices. You can explore the city’s unique atmosphere with fewer tourists.
April is the hottest month of the year. December is the coolest month of the year. February/March are the driest months of the year. And September/ October are the rainiest months of the year.
Ho Chi Minh City in January

Average temperature: 28°C (23.0°C to 32°C)
January is one of the best and busiest months to visit Ho Chi Minh City. It is in the dry season so you can maximize your time outdoors. The climate is pleasant with less rainfall, lower humidity, full of sunshine, and clear blue sky.
You can visit major attractions such as the War Museum, Independence Palace, and Emperor Jade Pagoda. You can go shopping at traditional markets or modern shopping malls such as Ben Thanh market, Central Market, Saigon Central, or Vincom Dong Khoi.
You can enjoy the nightlife at many bars and nightclubs in the city, especially on Bui Vien Street, Nguyen Hue/ Dong Khoi area, Japan town, or Thao Dien area. There are also many Vietnamese street foods to try including pho, bun bo hue, banh my, hu tieu…

Average temperature: 28°C (22°C to 32°C)
February is a part of the dry season in Ho Chi Minh City, making it one of the most popular times to visit the city. This is the driest month of the year with almost no rainfall and relatively low humidity.
The first half of February is usually the time of Lunar New Year celebration, which is the most important holiday in Vietnam. You can explore flower markets, watch cultural performances, visit attractions like Nguyen Hue Walking Street, Ben Thanh market, War Museum, Independence Palace, and Cu Chi tunnel.
As the festive season, prices for accommodations and flights in February are usually high, so be sure to book everything in advance to have the best deal. Also, take the note that many shops will be closed, so it’s a good idea to plan ahead if you visit the city during this time.
Ho Chi Minh City in March

Average temperature: 29°C (25°C-34°C)
Similar to February, March is one of the best months to visit Ho Chi Minh City. It has pleasant weather with little rain and a relatively low humidity. This month is a great time for outdoor activities, sightseeing, and day trips to the Mekong delta and Cu Chi Tunnels.
Some of the best things to do in March in Ho Chi Minh is visiting cultural/historical attractions like The war museum, Reunification Palace, Notre Dame Cathedral. You can take a river cruise along Saigon River, go shopping at Ben Thanh Market, or spend your night out at Bui Vien Walking Street.
Ho Chi Minh City in April

Average temperature: 31°C (28°C-36°C)
April is still a good time to visit Ho Chi Minh City, even though it is the hottest time of the year. I stayed in Ho Chi Minh a few times in April and it was extremely hot and humid. You can still visit many attractions, just be mindful of the heat, drink lots of water, wear a hat, and apply sun cream frequently.
Reunification Day (April 30th) and Labor Day holiday on May 1st are major public holidays in Vietnam. You can check out some cultural events and activities such as fireworks and demonstrations. Popular historical places such as Reunification Palace and war museum, attracting lots of visitors during this time.
Locals will have few days off work and many people will choose to go on holiday. If you plan to visit Vietnam during April 30th and May 1st period, be sure to book your flights and hotels in advance. If you want to avoid crowds, I recommend avoiding popular destinations such as Phu Quoc, Nha Trang, Da Nang during this time.
Ho Chi Minh City in May

Average temperature: 31°C (27°C-35°C)
May is the start of the rainy season in Ho Chi Minh City, but it still has plenty of sunshine, high temperature, and relatively high humidity with sudan pouring rain in the afternoon.
The occasional unexpected showers can be great to cool down the heat. You are still able to see most sights in the city. Always bring umbrellas or raincoast when going out during this month.
As April 30th and May 1st are holidays, lots of locals are on their vacation or on their way returning home, so flights and hotels are still expensive.
Ho Chi Minh City in June

Average temperature: 29°C (26°C-33°C)
June is a part of the rainy season in Ho Chi Minh City, and it can ve a good month to visit Ho Chi Minh on a budget. The city is experiencing hot weather with a high chance of heavy rains and thunderstorms. Frequent rains can cause flooding in some streets.
Despite frequent rains, there are still plenty of dry and bright daylight hours to explore. You can visit cultural attractions, enjoy shopping, and nightlife without less tourist crowds.
Popular event in HCMC in June is the The Southern Fruit Festival at Suoi Tien Park. You can try many tropical fruits here such as durian, mango, and avocado.
Ho Chi Minh City in July

Average temperature: 29°C (25°C -33°C)
July is the wet/ rainy season in Ho Chi Minh City. It is still a hot and humid month with frequent short tropical rainstorms in the afternoon. You can enjoy lots of indoor activities such as shopping malls, museums, as well as checking out many restaurants, and bars.
I recommend protecting your valuables from the rain; wearing waterproof shoes, sandals or flip flops to avoid getting soaked.
Ho Chi Minh City in August

Average temperature: 29°C (25°C -33°C)
Similar to July, August is the rainy season in Ho Chi Minh City, so you’ll experience hot, humid weather, and short-lasting heavy rain accompanied by occasional thunderstorms in the afternoon. This time is a good time to travel for those looking for off-peak seasons, budget-friendly flights and accommodations.
Ho Chi Minh City in September

Average temperature: 29°C (27°C-29°C)
September is a part of the rainy season in Saigon, which is typically from May to November. You will experience hot and rainy days during this time.
National Independence Day and Mid Autumn Festival are big events in September. You can join some local activities such as fireworks and parades.
Ho Chi Minh City in October
Average temperature: 28°C (25°C-32°C)
December is part of the rainy season in Ho Chi Minh City. Similar to September, it has hot weather with occasional rain, high temperature and humidity.
Ho Chi Minh City in November

Average temperature: 29°C (23°C -30°C)
November is a good time to visit Ho Chi Minh City. It has pleasant weather for enjoying outdoor activities and sightseeing. It is still part of the rainy season, so be prepared for occasional rain.
November is not as crowded as the dry season but has a higher number of tourists compared to the peak of the rainy season. Flights and accommodations are generally more affordable during this month.
You can explore iconic attractions such as the Independence Palace, Notre Dame Cathedral, Cu Chi Tunnels, try the local street food, or go shopping at Ben Thanh Market.
Ho Chi Minh City in December

Average temperature: 28°C
December is one of the best months to visit Ho Chi Minh City. It is a part of the dry season with little rain and relatively mild temperature.
In December, you can explore lots of things in HCMC including visiting popular attractions, shopping, trying local foods, and enjoying the nightlife. Additionally, you can experience the lively Chrismast atmosphere in the city as well as watch locals prepare for the Lunar New Year holiday.
