Da Lat and Nha Trang are popular tourist destinations in South Central Vietnam. Da Lat is a mountain city known for its cool climate, beautiful waterfalls, peaceful pine forests, stunning temples, good food, and French colonial style buildings.
Nha Trang is a beach town, known for its beautiful beaches, islands, water activities, lively nightlife scene, fresh seafood, and lots of high-rise buildings.
In this article, I will compare between Da Lat and Nha Trang to help you decide which city is better for your visit. I will analyze their locations, beaches, natural attractions, cultural attractions, nightlife, shopping, and food.
I’m Vietnamese and I have traveled to both Da Lat and Nha Trang, so I hope to give you some useful information based on my local knowledge and first-hand experiences.
Da Lat or Nha Trang, which city is better to visit?
The simple answer is that, if you want beaches, island hopping, fresh seafood, and luxury resorts, Nha Trang is a better choice. If you want a more laid-back atmosphere, mountain activities and attractions, or just want to escape from the heat, Da Lat is a better choice.

I personally enjoyed my visit to both cities. You can easily visit them within a single trip as they are only located 3-4 hours drive apart. You can stay 3-4 nights in Da Lat, then take minivans or buses to Nha Trang and stay there for another 3-4 days.
If you are planning to stay long term in either Da Lat or Nha Trang, I recommend spending a few days in each city to find out which one is best suited for you.
I like Da Lat for its cool refreshing atmosphere, the pine forest, the winding roads, massive farm lands, and great food, as well as impressive natural and cultural attractions. If you’re taking a meditation or yoga retreat, Da Lat is a better place to go.
Da Lat is surrounded by beautiful waterfalls, where you can do sightseeing and enjoy many outdoor activities such as white water rafting, alpine coaster, or high ropes courses. Famous ones to visit are Datanla Waterfall, Pongour, and Elephant Falls.
There are also many beautiful cultural and historical attractions such as temples, summer places, churches and buildings with typical French architecture. I recommend visiting some popular attractions such as Linh Phuoc pagoda, Linh An pagoda, Bao Dai Palace, and Dalat train station.
Additionally, the city has a great food scene, with fresh vegetables and fruit grown in the region. Nha Trang also has a great food scene, but it has more seafood options.
In Nha Trang, you have a long coast with many beaches and island activities. You can enjoy beaches in the city center such as Tran Phu Beach or Hon Chong Beach, or head to nearby islands like Hon Tre, Hon Tam, or Monkey island for more tranquil beaches.
The city also has a great nightlife and shopping scene. In my opinion, Nha Trang has more bars and shopping malls than Da Lat, so if you want a good mix of nightlife and shopping, Nha Trang is the place to go.
Nha Trang also has some interesting cultural attractions to explore like the Po Nagar Temple, Linh Son pagoda, and Dam Market. Nha Trang is one of the best places in Vietnam to try a mud bath, so if you want this experience, it is a better place to go.

There are several small waterfalls in the city center like Cam Ly Waterfall, but if you want to see impressive waterfalls, I recommend visiting Datanla Waterfall, Prenn Waterfall, Elephant Waterfall, or Pongour Waterfall.

Historical Influences
Both Da Lat and Nha Trang have interesting histories. The history of Da Lat was recorded from the late 19th century when Dr Alexandre Yersin discovered the region.
The history of Nha Trang was recorded from the 2nd century when it was a part of Cham Kingdom, and then Dai Viet.
Early Origins
Da Lat
The name “Da Lat” means “the river of Lach People”. These are the original tribe that lived in the Langbiang Plateau before the French transformed the city into a resort town for the French colonial administration. D’Lat (Lạch people) are a part of K’Ho ethnic group.
Dr Alexandre Yersin, a French person of Swiss origin, discovered Da Lat in 1893, opening a new chapter in the history of Da Lat. Although other explorers had previously reached the area, Yersin had an important role in persuading the French colonial authorities to develop the area.
With a temperate climate, the French built Da Lat into a resort station. They built French-style villas, churches, and railway stations to connect with the central coast area and Saigon.
Popular sites that still exist today such as the the Dalat Palace Hotel (1907), the Pedagogical College (1927), the three palaces (Dinh I, II, and III), Da Lat Railway Station (1938), the Chicken Church (1942), and hundreds of historic villas scattering around the pine-covered hillsides.
Nha Trang
The name “Nha Trang” means “Ea Dran” or “Ya Trang” in Cham language, which translates to “Reed River”. Nha Trang is located at the lower part of the 84km long Cai River and it was historically covered by reeds.
Nha Trang was part of the Cham Kingdom from the 2nd to 17th century. Champa was a maritime kingdom, rich in trade, art, and architecture influenced by India.
Today, you can see the ruins of Cham Kingdom in many parts around Central Vietnam. The famous Cham site in Nha Trang is the Po Nagar Temple, dating back to the 8th century.
Nha Trang was officially incorporated into Dai Viet (Vietnam) in the 17th century, under the rule of Nguyen Lords.
Nguyen Lord built Thai Khang Citadel in 1690, then changed name to Dien Khanh in 1742 to control the area. This was a frequent battleground between the Tây Sơn forces and Nguyễn Ánh (the future Emperor Gia Long).
The French colonial period (1858-1954)
The French colony developed Nha Trang as a port and seaside resort. They built infrastructure like ports, roads, and luxury hotels for Europeans and colonial administrators.
Da Lat was developed as a highland retreat and mountain resort for the French to escape the heat from the lowlands. They built European-style villas, schools, and government buildings.
The French built the Da Lat-Thap Cham railway to connect Da Lat to the coastal area and Saigon. This train is not running between these two cities today, but the old train station in Da lat still offers tourist trains within the city from the downtown to nearby Trai Mat station, close to Linh Phuoc pagoda.
Dr. Yersin played a significant role in the history of both cities during the French colonial period. He found Da Lat and advised the French colonial administration to develop Da Lat into a resort station.
Dr. Yersin made Nha Trang his home to do medical research and studying tropical diseases, which informed French colonial health policies.
American-Vietnam War
Nha Trang was an important US airbase during the Vietnam War. Da Lat was one of the sites of the 1968 Tet Offensive Battle, Việt Cộng forces launched a surprise attack and seized parts of the city.
Today
Both cities today are major tourist destinations in Vietnam. Nha Trang is known for its beaches, and entertainment activities, while Da Lat is known for its cool climates, and stunning mountain landscape. They are located just 4hours drive apart, so it’s easy to visit both cities within one trip.
Cost of Living: Is Nha Trang cheaper than Da Lat?
In terms of accommodations for visitors in the city center, I think Nha Trang has cheaper and more spacious accommodations than Da Lat. If you are long-term renters, you can find similar renting in both places, especially if you go to the more local areas.
Food and drinks, from my experiences, are quite similar between Da Lat and Nha Trang. They generally have cheaper cost of living compared to bigger cities like Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City.
Nha Trang vs Da Lat Weather
Nha Trang is a coastal city and often has warmer weather compared to Da Lat, a mountainous city. Da Lat, in my experience, has mild temperatures and fresh air. It is an ideal place to visit to escape from the heat of the nearby cities such as Ho Chi Minh City and Nha Trang.
Both cities have distant rainy and dry seasons. In Da Lat, the dry season is from November to April, and the rainy season is from May to October. In Nha Trang, the dry season is often longer from January to August and the rainy season is from September to November.
Nha Trang often experiences storms in the peak rainy season, from September to November, so I recommend avoiding this city during this period if you want to maximize outdoor activities and fully enjoy the beaches.
Getting Around
Riding share services such as Grab taxi and Grab bike are available in both Da Lat and Nha Trang. You can easily find them in the city center area and use them for a short distance around the city center.
If you go to the more countryside areas, you might not be able to get Grab back at the city center, so make sure to arrange your transport in advance.
I used Grab from Da Lat center to Linh Phuoc Pagoda, but it was very difficult to find a driver to get back to the city. I got lucky after dozens of failed attempts and a lot of waiting.
A tip is to ask the driver when you take you to the countryside area to ask if the driver can pick you up later. Most of them will be happy to do it. If you are happy with their services, you can give them some tips.
In addition to Grab, there are also many traditional taxis. For me, as a Vietnamese person, I often ask the price and agree on it in advance before getting into the car.
You can get around Da Lat city center and Nha Trang City center on foot. Most major attractions, popular restaurants, and bars, are located within walking distance from each other. If you want to avoid the heat, you can use a Grab bike or taxi.
