Taking a cruise is one of the best ways to explore Halong Bay. When choosing a Halong Bay cruise, you’ll have the option for taking a day cruise and an overnight cruise. But Which one is better? Let’s look at the details of Halong Bay Overnight Cruise or Day Cruise in this article.
Is Halong Bay day cruise or overnight cruise better?
In my opinion, taking the Halong Bay Overnight cruise is a better option if you want to experience the bay at a relaxing pace. It allows you to see Halong Bay at different times of the day, enjoy the tranquility of the bay at night and early morning when it’s less crowded.
The downside of taking an overnight cruise is that it comes with a significantly higher cost, especially if luxury accommodations and activities are included. But, I think it is one of the lifetime experiences, and it is well worth it.
On the other hand, taking the Halong Day Cruise is a better option if you have a limited budget and time. With this tour, you can see highlights of Halong Bay in a short time at an affordable price.
The downside of this day trip from Hanoi is you’ll have to spend lots of time on the road, around 6-7 hours on bus in total, and around 4-6 hours on the cruise. To make the most of the day trip, I recommend taking the expressway between Hanoi and Halong Port which is around 5 hours two ways.
You can also consider staying a night in Halong City, then take a day cruise to the bay. This way, you’ll have less time travel on the road and more time relaxing on the cruise.
Another popular way to spend a day cruise on Halong Bay is to stay overnight on Cat Ba island, then take day cruises to Lan Ha Bay or Halong Bay. You can find many affordable day cruises from Cat Ba island, where you can enjoy stunning views of breathtaking limestone karts, and participate in outdoor activities such as kayaking, swimming, and rock climbing.

Halong Bay Day Cruise Vs Overnight Cruise Duration
The Day Cruise surely has a shorter time than the overnight cruise. The day cruise usually lasts from 4-8 hours, while the overnight cruise lasts from 24 to 48 hours. If you have limited time and want to have a quick look at the bay, The day cruise is a better choice.
In general, if you take a day trip, the cruise company will pick you up in Hanoi Old Quarter in the early morning. You’ll be in the port within 2.5 to 4 hours depending on which road you take. It is better to take a day cruise with a transfer on the expressway between Hanoi and Halong to reduce time on the road.
You’ll be in Halong around 12pm, on board, have lunch while the cruise moves into the bay, visit some islands, caves, and have a small kayaking or swimming experience. Your trip will end around 5pm then back to the shuttle bus to get back to Hanoi.
With the one night and two night cruise, you can have more time to do more explorations and outdoor activities. In addition to cave explorations, beach activities, some hiking, kayaking, you can participate in cooking class, tai chi class, or squid fishing at night.
Halong Bay Day Cruise or Overnight Cruise for Luxury?
In my opinion, if you want a luxury experience in Halong Bay, the overnight cruise is the way to go. The Day cruise is more affordable than the overnight option.
The Day cruise is generally simple boats that only focus on covering key attractions quickly. Popular tourist attractions are usually crowded in the day itinerary.
The Overnight Cruise has a wider range for all budgets, featuring suites and cabins with private balcony and bathtub, high-end dining, and upscale amenities.
Halong Bay Overnight Cruise vs Day Cruise Accommodation and Meals
Halong Bay Day Cruises usually focus more on the sightseeing aspect, with one basic meal included but no accommodation. You will spend your time on the deck or communal area.
The Overnight Cruise includes accommodation, multiple meals (lunch, dinner, and breakfast), as well as extras such as cooking classes, happy hour, or wine tasting.
Halong Bay Overnight Cruise Vs Day Cruise Activities
Halong Bay Overnight Cruise has more activities than the day cruise. Within the 4-8 hours On the Day Cruise, you will visit some of the most famous caves on the bay such as Sung Sot Cave, or Thien Cung Cave. Some cruises can offer small kayaking experiences through Dark & Bright Cave.
Within a 1 night or 2 nights cruise, you can enjoy tai chi class in the early morning, watching the sun rise. You’ll have a chance to visit a floating village such as Cua Van floating village.
With more time than the day trip, you can explore more caves such as Sung Sot Cave, Thien Cung Cave, Trong Cave, Trinh Nu Cave, Me Cung Cave, and Dau Go Cave.
You can enjoy swimming at some beaches such as Ti Top island, climbing to its top, or cycling in Viet Hai village on Cat Ba island. At night, you can try hand squid fishing on cruise.

So, Which is better, Day cruise or Overnight Cruise on Halong Bay?
Overall, I recommend taking the day cruise if you have limited time, tight budget, and still want to see highlights of the bay. Just take a note this option will involve lots of travel on the road, a rushed experience, and can be crowded in popular spots.
The Overnight Cruise is the most popular way for foreign tourists to explore Halong Bay. It gives more time to get deeper insights of this world heritage site. The disadvantage of this option is it is more expensive than the day cruise option. But I think it is well worth investing in because it is one of the must-do activities in Vietnam.
In my experience, I would choose the 1 night cruise on Halong Bay because it has the balance between the day cruise and the 2-night cruise. It is not as expensive as the 2-night cruise but enough to get a full experience of the bay both night and day. It also allows more time for exploration compared to the rushed one-day trips from Hanoi.
