Is it better to stay in Ho Chi Minh City or Nha Trang?
Generally speaking, Ho Chi Minh is more ideal for first-timers to Vietnam. The city has a good combination of history, food, culture, nightlife, shop, and good day trips, which gives a complete introduction to Vietnam in one place.


Nha Trang is a better choice than Ho Chi Minh, if you’re looking for a relaxing beach holiday with vibrant nightlife, shopping, great food, and plenty of island-hopping opportunities. The city also has some interesting historical attractions.
Ho Chi Minh City is often known as the gateway to southern Vietnam. It’s home to Tan Son Nhat International Airport, which is one of Vietnam’s busiest and most connected, with direct flights from many countries.
Most visitors to Vietnam arrive in Ho Chi Minh City first, before traveling to other parts of the country, like Nha Trang. Nha Trang has an international airport, but it’s less connected than Ho Chi Minh airport.
Both cities are great places to stay in Vietnam for long term travelers and expats. Ho Chi Minh has more infrastructure, nightlife, and shopping, while Nha Trang offers beach life and a more affordable cost of living.
You can also consider visiting both cities, as they are only 1 hour flights apart. Spending at least 2–3 days in each city will give you a good sense of what each place has to offer.

Location and How to Get There
Ho Chi Minh is located on the banks of Sai Gon River in South Vietnam. Nha Trang is located along the East Sea in South Central Vietnam. It’s around 400km north of Ho Chi Minh City. It’s roughly a 1-hour flight, or 6–7 hours by bus or train.

Both cities have an international airport, so you can easily get to these cities by airplane. Ho Chi Minh airport is bigger and more popular, so it has more frequent flights than Nha Trang.
Most first-time visitors to Vietnam arrive in big cities like Ho Chi Minh first, then travel to other parts of the country.
In addition to the air, you can reach both Ho Chi Minh City by road. There are long distance buses and trains connecting these places with other cities in Vietnam.
Accommodations
Both Ho Chi Minh City and Nha Trang have a wide range of accommodations for all budgets. You can easily find luxury hotels and backpackers hostels.


There are plenty of skyscrapers in both Ho Chi Minh City and Nha Trang. These accommodations often offer rooftop bars and infinite swimming pools with city views or ocean views.
Accommodations in Ho Chi Minh are generally more expensive in Nha Trang. If you want good priced hotels, you can consider heading to Nha Trang. Whether you choose to stay, make sure to book well in advance to secure your stay.

Nightlife
Ho Chi Minh City is a major hub for nightlife in Vietnam, making it a better place to visit for nightlife in a party. The city has many different nightlife zones where you can enjoy cheap street parties, rooftop bars, trendy nightclubs, and karaoke.


Some key nightlife areas in Ho Chi Minh include Bui Vien Walking Street, Nguyen Hue walking street, and Saigon Japan town. Bui Vien is a lively backpacker street filled with street-side bars, live music, street food, and energetic beats.
For high-end bars and night clubs you can head to the Nguyen Hue and Dong Khoi area. Saigon Japan Town also has lively Japanese style bars, restaurants, and massage shops.
Nha Trang has a decent nightlife scene, but it’s definitely quieter and more laid-back compared to Ho Chi Minh. You can find some good bars, restaurants, beachfront clubs along the main roads and the beachfront area to have a chill evening out.
Shopping
Ho Chi Minh City is a bigger and more developed city, so it has a wider range of modern high-end malls to bustling street markets. If you want to go shopping, Ho Chi Minh is a better place to go.


Popular places to do shopping in Saigon are Saigon Square, Vincom Center, Takashimaya, and the Ben Thanh Market. You can easily find luxury brands as well as affordable clothing, accessory, souvenirs, and local goods.
The shopping in Nha Trang is more relaxed, with fewer malls, markets, and beach-side shops. You can shop at the mid-range shopping malls, Nha Trang Center, for clothes, cosmetics, and accessories.
For cheaper bargaining local crafts, textiles, and souvenirs, make sure to check out Dam Market. There are also numerous shops in the city center selling beachwear, souvenirs, and local items.
Food


Both cities are great places to visit for foodies. Ho Chi Minh has a wider range of restaurants and fine dining options. Nha Trang has some regional food and a great place to eat fresh seafood.
Must-try dishes in Ho Chi Minh city include Pho, banh mi, Com tam (broken rice with pork), Hu tieu (noodle soup), Banh Xeo (Vietnamese pancakes). Food in Ho Chi Minh city has a Southern Vietnamese flavor, which is usually sweeter and more herbs.
Ho Chi Minh City also has a variety of International cuisine, including Italian, Korean, Japanese, making it a foodie’s paradise.
The highlight of the food scene in Nha Trang is the fresh seafood and local specialties. Some must try dishes are Báanh canh (thick noodle soup with seafood), nem nuong (grilled pork skewers), grilled fish, crabs, prawns. The food in Nha Trang is usually cheaper than HCMC.
Cultural Attractions
Ho Chi Minh City is a great place to go for history buffs and those interested in Vietnam’s war history and colonial architecture. The cultural attractions in Nha Trang are more focused on Cham culture and Buddhist traditions.


Major historical and cultural attractions in Ho Chi Minh City are the War Remnants Museum, Reunification Palace, Notre-Dame Cathedral, Saigon Central Post Office, Saigon Opera House, and Ben Thanh Market.
At these museums and palaces, you can learn about the Vietnam American War by viewing photos, military equipment, and historical buildings. Places like the Post Office and Notre-Dame Cathedral have beautiful French colonial architecture.
In Nha Trang, you can learn about ancient history at the Po Nagar Cham Towers. These 7th-century Hindu temples are a major historical site built by the Cham people, offering a glimpse into the region’s Cham heritage.
Other major cultural attractions in Nha Trang are the Buddhist Long Son Pagoda, and the old French colonial church Nha Trang Cathedral with a beautiful view of the city.
The city also has some museums to explore such as the National Oceanographic Museum showing Vietnam’s marine life and history. The Alexandre Yersin Museum is also worth visiting if you’re interested in the life of this famous Swiss doctor.
Outdoor Activities/ Day Trips
From Ho Chi Minh City, you can take day trips to Cu Chi tunnels or the Meklong delta.Cu Chi Tunnels is the vast underground network used during the war, Mekong Delta is known for its life on the river with floating markets and tropical fruits.

In Nha Trang, there are plenty of beach activities and island hopping tours. You can take snorkeling and diving trips to nearby islands such as Monkey island, Hon Mieu, Hon Tam, and Hon Lao.
Additionally, on the mainland, you can visit Ba Ho Waterfalls, which is a great place for trekking, waterfalls, and swimming in natural pools.
You can take the scenic cable car to Vinpearl Island, an entertainment complex with a water park, amusement rides, aquariums, and beautiful beaches. It’s a fun activity for families.
Cost of Living
Nha Trang generally has a cheaper cost of living than Ho Chi Minh city. It attracts lots of expats due to its beach life and low cost of living. Accommodations in Nha Trang are much cheaper than Ho Chi Minh with the similar location and quality. Food and drinks are also cheaper.
Weather
Both Ho Chi Minh City and Nha Trang have warmer weather than North Vietnam. The rainy season is generally from May to October.
Nha Trang, located along the coast, can experience typhoons and flooding, so be mindful if visiting this city in the storm season, usually from September to December.
Getting Around
Both cities have many local taxis and riding share services such as Grab. You can easily get around by Grab Bike and Grab taxi.
Nha Trang City center is more compact than Ho Chi Minh City, so it’s easier to get around on foot. Both cities have warm weather all year round, so if you are tired of walking or want to avoid the heat, you can also order the Grab Ride.
