When planning a visit to Halong, you might be wondering how many days is enough? In this article, I will help you to decide how long to spend in Halong Bay and my suggestions for a day cruise and 2-days to 3-day itineraries on Halong Bay.
Halong Bay is one of the top must-see destinations in Vietnam. It is a UNESCO world heritage site known for its thousands of stunning karst rising above the ocean.
Halong Bay is located only around a 4 hours car drive from Hanoi’s Old Quarter. You can travel easily between these two popular destinations by private cars, public buses, or cruise’s shuttle services.
There are three most popular ways to explore Halong Bay. They include:
- Halong day tour from Hanoi
- Halong 2-days and 1-night cruise
- Halong 3-days and 2-nights cruise
While you can take day trips to Halong Bay from Hanoi, it is recommended to spend at least a night or two to experience the best of the bay. You can also consider combining a stay a night on a cruise and a night in Halong City.
How Many Days in Halong Bay is Enough?
In my opinion, the 2-days and 1-night cruise is a good amount to spend in Halong Bay. This is indeed the most popular and affordable option to explore Halong Bay. One night is enough to get a good introduction about the bay both day and night, and enjoy activities such as swimming and kayaking.
If you want to experience the bay at a more relaxing pace and see more attractions along the way. I recommend taking the 3-day and 2-nights tour. This 3-day cruise can cost more but taking a cruise on Halong Bay is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and it is well worth it.
You can consider taking a day cruise on Halong Bay, which is a favorite option of domestic tourists to explore the Bay. They usually stay in a hotel in Halong city and take a few hour day cruise on Halong Bay.
You can do a day cruise starting from Hanoi but it can be very rushed. You’ll need to travel around 4 hours on the bus to get to Tuan Chau port, have only a few hours on Halong Bay, then another 4 hours on the bus to get back to Hanoi. If your time is limited and you don’t mind traveling long hours on buses, the one day cruise is a great choice.
With all options, from day tour to 1-night cruise and 2-nights cruise, you’ll have a chance to admire the beautiful landscape of Halong, visit highlight attractions such as caves and islands, and enjoy outdoor activities such as swimming and kayaking.
With an overnight cruise, you can experience Halong bay at night and early morning when all daytime tourists have left. The 2-nights cruise has a similar schedule as the 1-night cruise but it will have an extra day for cycling and exploring Cat Ba island.
Is it better to spend 1 or 2 nights on Halong Bay?
The 1-night cruise is a better option if you want to experience Halong both day and night and don’t want to spend too much on the cruise. Some travelers can feel bored with repeated scenery and activities on the extra days if taking the 2-night cruise.
The 2-night cruise is a better option if you want to explore Halong Bay at a relaxing pace, see more attractions (like visiting Cat Ba island), and do more activities. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so it’s worth investing a little extra to make the most of it.

So, How long should you spend in Halong Bay?
In my opinion, the one-night cruise is enough to admire the beautiful landscape of Halong Bay, visit famous caves, and enjoy some outdoor activities such swimming and kayaking.
However, for some travelers, the one-night cruise feels like a blink and may not be enough to fully experience the best of the bay. If you want to explore at a more relaxing pace, the two-night cruise is the best choice. You can have an additional day for visiting more attractions and enjoy more activities.
For those who have a limited budget and time, the day cruise is a great option. This can be a nice option if you consider staying a night in Halong city. Otherwise, you’ll need to travel a lot on buses from Halong port and Hanoi.
