How many days in Nha Trang is enough? 2 to 3 Days Itinerary

I recently had 3 nights and 2 full days in Nha Trang, so in this article, I will share my view about how long is enough in Nha Trang and my suggestion for a 2 to 3 days itinerary in Nha Trang.

Nha Trang is a popular beach holiday located in south Vietnam, more than 40 km away from Ho Chi Minh City. Nha Trang is easily reachable by airplane and by road. It has an international airport called Cam Ranh airport located approximately one hour drive from the city center. You can easily get direct flights to Nha Trang from big cities like Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh.

You can take the train to Nha Trang. Nha Trang train station is located in the city center, so you can get to your accommodation easily by a short Grab taxi ride.

If you come from a nearby city like Mui Ne, Da Lat, or Quy Nhon, you can take sleeper buses or limousines. I used a limousine from Da lat to Nha Trang. It was a 3.5 hour ride, and the driver picked me up from the hotel in Da lat and dropped me off at my hotel in Nha Trang (very convenient as I don’t have to use extra transportation to get to my last destination in the city center).

In my opinion, 2 to 3 days in Nha Trang is enough to enjoy the beaches, watersports, island hopping, see most major attractions, try local seafood, and enjoy the nightlife. If you come to Nha Trang to just relax and enjoy the beaches, you can spend as much time as you want.

Basically, you can spend one full day exploring the cultural and historical attractions in the city center. You can visit Nha Trang Cathedral, Long Son Pagoda, Dam Market, Po Nagar Cham tower, and Hon Chong Promontory. You can swim at Tran Phu Beach, browse the night market, shopping center, or find a nice seafood restaurant to have a meal.

One full day for island hopping, especially if you enjoy swimming, snorkeling, and diving. The most popular for island hopping tours include Hon Mieu Island, Hon Mun Island, Hon Yen Island, Monkey Island, Hon Tam Island, and Hon Tre Island.

You can spend one full day on Hon Tre island, especially if you travel with kids. It is where Vinpearl resort and the famous themed park Vinwonders. You can take the ride on the 3km sea-crossing cable car, try all the rides in the amusement park, enjoy the waterpark, or go shopping/dining at the Vinpearl Harbour.

Nha Trang is known for its mud bath, so you can also add a half day/ full day relaxing at a Hot Spring and Mud Bath Complex. Famous places in Nha Trang for these activities include  I-Resort, Thap Ba, and 100 Egg Mud Bath Spa.

I was able to see most attractions in Nha Trang during my last 2 full days and 3 nights in this city. I spent one day exploring the city center with attractions like the cathedral, pagoda, Cham tower, and Monkey island. I spent time relaxing on Tran Phu Beach, and wandering around the area around Tran Phu street.

I spent my second day on Hon Tre island at Vinpearl resort. I booked a night on Tre island. I ordered a Grab taxi to get to Vinpearl Land around 12pm, do some check in, then get into a cable car to the island. I spent the afternoon exploring its beaches, the ocean road, and relaxing at the swimming pool. Then do some shopping and have dinner at Vinpearl Harbor. I didn’t buy the ticket for Vinwonders though.

In Nha Trang city center, I stayed at the Liberty Central Hotel. I recommend it as it has clean, comfortable rooms, and a very central location, only a short walk to the beach and a range of restaurants. I also stayed at Azura Gold Hotel, but I won’t stay at this hotel again as my room was not clean during my stay.

If you have a larger budget or you travel with kids, I highly recommend Vinpearl resort and spa. I only stayed here for a night and love it. It has a clean, white sandy beach, not crowded. There are multiple swimming pools both for adults and childrens if you don’t want to swim in the sea. The Vinwonder themed park has lots of activities to entertain people of all ages.

How to Spend 2 to 3 Days in Nha Trang Itinerary

Day 1: The city center: Nha Trang church, Long Son Pagoda, Dam Market, Po Nagar Towers, Monkey island, and Hon Chong

On the first day, after checking in the hotel, you can take a stroll around the area you’re in. I suppose you stay in the city center, either along Tran Phu street or just a few blocks away from the beach. You can take a look at local attractions such as Tran Phu Beach, April 2nd Square, or Tram Huong Tower.

You can easily explore the city center by walking or taking Grab bike/ taxi. I traveled alone, so I decided to take a Grab Bike. Grab a taxi is the better option if you travel as a group or family.

I used Grabbike to get to Nha Trang Cathedral (Nhà thờ Núi in Vietnamese). It is a beautiful church located on a small hill overlooking the city. You can spend 30  to 60 minutes here wandering around and admire its architecture. The entrance fee is free but during my visit, there was a guard at the entrance demanding for a donation before entering the gate. I put 20,000VND there to just go in.

From Nha Trang Church, I booked another Grab bike to Long Son pagoda. It is a nice buddhist temple located only 5 minutes drive away. You need to hike up numerous steps to get to the top of the temple. It was very hot during my visit in May, so I was a bit tired.

On the way up, be sure to check out the lying buddha statue. You’ll see a giant White Budda statue at the top and have sweeping views of the city from here. Like any other temple in Vietnam, you should cover your knee and shoulder before entering the temple. It is free entrance.

Then I used Grab to Dam Market. I had some pineapple juice at the gate of the market. Lots of stalls here selling different goods. You can buy everything here from fresh fruits, local products, accessories, and clothes. Be sure to bargain to have the best deals.

After walking around the market, I headed to Po Nagar Cham tower. It is located 2 km away north of the city center. You can buy a ticket at the entrance. It was a beautiful Hindu temple with amazing views of the city and the sea. You can spend an hour here exploring different halls and relaxing at one of its many shaded seating areas (important during the hot day).

From Po Nagar tower, I took another Grab to get to Long Phu wharf (Bến tàu du lịch Long Phú) to get to Monkey island. It was quite a long ride, 30 minutes on a motorbike. But the driver was friendly and offered to take me back to the city center when I finished my excursion.

I bought a ticket at a Ticket Booth at the Pier. They also have a combo for other islands too, but I only buy a ticket to Monkey island. The ticket includes two way high speed canoes, and some free uses of facilities on the island such as sunbeds and chairs. It doesn’t include food and drink.

I was surprised that there were a lot of Monkeys on the island. They’re roaming everywhere, on the road, in the forest. They swim in the pool, even jump from the cliffs to the pool. Just don’t feed them with your hand as some monkeys are very aggressive.

The animal (dog/monkey) circus show was the highlight of the visit. It is only scheduled for a few times a day, so be sure to check the current timetable if you want to watch it.

I got back to the land and called my driver to pick me up. I asked him to drive me to Hon Chong Promontory, which is a lovely natural rock formation. He drove me though the beautiful Pham Van Dong coast line. You buy a ticket at the entrance. It was sunset time, so it was a bit crowded. You can do a bit of climbing over the rocks and have good views of the city’s skyscrapers.

I also walked a bit outside of Hon Chong Promontory all the way to Hon Chong Beach. Then got another Grab to the city center. I visited Tran Phu Beach, had a drink at Sailing Club Nha Trang, explored the night market, and Tram Huong tower.

I had a nice dinner at the Restaurant Cilantro. I think it is a delicious and reasonably priced restaurant in central Nha Trang. I recommend checking it out if you are on Hung Vuong Street.

Day 2: Island hopping, snorkeling, and scuba diving

Nha Trang is known for its beautiful sandy beaches. You can simply just relax or swim at the long beach in the city center along Tran Phu Beach. Lots of hotels have their beach facilities here such as sunbeds and umbrellas for their guests. The beach is often packed with people in the early morning and late afternoon when the sunlight is less intense.

In addition to the lively Tran Phu Beach, you can check out more quieter beaches such as Doc Let Beach or Bai Dai Beach, which is 20 minutes drive south of the downtown area.

Nha Trang has many small islands off the mainland. You can consider taking an island hopping tour where you can visit several islands in one day. Popular islands on this tour include Hon Mieu, Hon Mun, Hon Tam, Hon Tre, and Hon Yen.

Be mindful reading their tour description before you book it. Some tours have a party/ backpackers vibe, some tours focus more on smoking and diving. Some tours include lunch and a mud bath.

Day 3: Hon Tre island and Vinwonders themed park

Hon Tre island is the biggest island in all of the islands of Nha Trang. It is home to big brand resorts like Vinpearl and Mariiot. It is also the location of Vinwonders themed park and Vin Harbor, so you can spend a day here to just explore this complex. You can consider staying at Vinpearl resort, especially if you travel as a couple or with children.

To get to Vinpearl, you can use the cable car or speed boat. I stayed in Vinpearl resort, so this transport is free to use. I used a cable car to get to the island and the speedboat to get back to the land as I wanted to experience both ways. The reception offered to transport my luggage separately.

You can book an all-inclusive package here which includes a buffet for three meals breakfast, lunch, and dinner. My booking only includes the buffet breakfast. The Menu in the room is quite expensive though but you can find places to eat near Vin Harbor. Overall, It is great for a relaxing getaway in Nha Trang.

I summarize how long should you spend in Nha Trang in this video, you can watch it here:

These are my recommendations for 2 to 3 days in Nha Trang. I believe that two to three days is enough time to see most major cultural sights and enjoy the beach activities like swimming, snorkeling, diving, or island hopping. You can try local seafood, browse the night market, and check out several beach bars.

I hope you found my article helpful for your next trip to Nha Trang. And Have a nice holiday in Vietnam!
