How many days in Nha Trang is enough? 2 to 3 Days Itinerary

Nha Trang has beautiful beaches, mountains, lots of entertainment activities, convenience of the city life, and friendly locals, so it’s easy to fall in love with this place.

I have visited Nha Trang a few times, spending somewhere from 3 nights to a week in this beach city. I will share my view about how long is enough in Nha Trang and my suggestion for a 2-3 days itinerary in Nha Trang for first-timers.

Nha Trang is a popular beach holiday located in south Vietnam, more than 40 km from Ho Chi Minh City, which is one of the two major cities in Vietnam.

Nha Trang has an international airport and a train station, so it’s very well connected with other parts of Vietnam and many countries in the world.

Cam Ranh international airport is around one hour drive from the city center, while the train station is located right in the city heart, a short Grab ride from most hotels in Nha Trang. From nearby cities such as Mui Ne, Da Lat, or Quy Nhon, you can take sleeper buses or minivans.

How many days in Nha Trang is enough?

In my opinion, if you are short on time, 2 to 3 days is generally enough to get the taste of the city with its beaches, nightlife, seafood, and some island hopping activities. If you want to relax and explore at a slower pace, I would recommend spending 5 days to a week in this city.

Best Things to do in Nha Trang City Center

When I visited the city the second time and I had flexibility, I kept extending my time in Nha Trang and always found something interesting to do. Or simply doing nothing, lying on the beach, sunbathing, and swimming.

Within 2 to 3 days in Nha Trang, you can explore the beaches, take an island hopping tour, see most major cultural attractions, try fresh seafood, and enjoy the nightlife.

Basically, you can spend one full day exploring the cultural and historical attractions in the city center. You can spend half a day visiting Nha Trang Cathedral, Long Son Pagoda, Dam Market, Po Nagar Cham Tower, and Hon Chong Promontory. In the afternoon onward, you can check out Tran Phu Beach, night market, malls, seafood restaurants, and beach bars.

Nha Trang is surrounded by small and beautiful islands, so I suggest spending a day island hopping, especially if you enjoy snorkeling and diving. The most popular for island hopping tours include Hon Mieu, Hon Mun, Hon Yen, Monkey Island, Hon Tam, and Hon Tre Island.

You can spend one full day on Hon Tre island to explore Vinwonders themed park. It’s not only a family-friendly attraction but also has many thrilling activities for adults. The cable car itself to the island is a must. Then there are water parks, shopping harbours and dozens of interesting activities to explore.

Nha Trang is known for its mud bath, so you can also add a half day relaxing at a Hot Spring and Mud Bath Complex. Famous places for these activities include I-Resort, Thap Ba, and 100 Egg Mud Bath Spa.

While Nha Trang is the beach city, it’s also a great hiking destination. If you’re into hiking, you can spend a day exploring Co Tien mountain, or Hoang Nguu Son Mountain. It’s well worth checking out for hikers and nature lovers.

When I first visited Nha Trang, I was able to see most of the attractions in Nha Trang within 3 full nights. I didn’t rent a scooter this time, just exploring the city on foot and by Grab Bike. Everything is super reasonably priced and within a short distance from each other.

I had experienced staying at several hotels in Nha Trang Center and Hon Tre island. In the city center, I recommend staying at Liberty Central Hotel and Ventana Nha Trang Hotel. These two hotels are located in super central locations, easy walk from everything including restaurants, shops, and beaches.

Most importantly, they offer clean rooms with comfortable beds and nice breakfast. Nha Trang has hundreds of hotels, it’s hard to find one mid-range and budget hotel that is clean, has good sound proofing, and for having a good night sleep.

I also had a good time staying at Hon Tre island at Vinpearl resort. It has a private beach, large swimming pool for both kids and adults, discounted tickets to Vinwonders, and free transport from the mainland to its island by cable car and speed boat of your choice.

How to Spend 2 to 3 Days in Nha Trang Itinerary

Day 1: The City Center and Nha Trang Beach

The city center of Nha Trang is relatively small, so it can be easily explored on foot or using Grab Bike/ taxi within a half day or a full day. You can rent a scooter for 100k-150k a day but it’s not necessary when exploring major sights in the city center.

When I visited Nha Trang the first time, I explored everything using Grab Bikes and walking. I only rented a scooter the next visit for more flexibility.

Tran Phu beach runs for around 5km right next to the city center, so you can easily walk to the beach for swimming and sunbathing. Most hotels are located within 3-4 blocks radius from the beach.

The popular attractions in Nha Trang city center include Nha Trang Cathedral, Long son pagoda, Dam Market, Po Nagar Cham tower, the night market, 30 april square, and Hon Chong Promontory. You can choose any of those to explore first, because they’re all within a few minutes ride from each other.

Nha Trang Cathedral

Nha Trang Cathedral, or Nhà thờ Núi in Vietnamese, is a good place to visit in Nha Trang to admire its beautiful French colonial architecture, take photos, and enjoy the views of the city.

This is a beautiful church located on a small hill overlooking the city. You can spend 30 minutes at its ground wandering around and there are benches on the shaded areas to sit and relax.

The entrance fee is free but during my visit, there was a guard at the entrance demanding for a donation before entering the gate. I put 20k VND there to just go in.

Long Son pagoda

From Nha Trang Church, I booked another Grab bike to Long Son pagoda. It is a nice buddhist temple located only 5 minutes drive away from the cathedral. The temple has a peaceful atmosphere, and a big statue of Buddha on the top of the hill overlooking the city.

The temple is free to visit. If you bring a scooter, the parking fee is 5k. You can spend 30 minutes to one hour exploring the temple grounds. There are main halls in the lower area and hike up for 10 minutes to reach the top to see the white buddha.

The walk up is easy but because of the heat, it can be very tiring. There was a motorbike driver who offered services to the top and went down for 50k. You can consider visiting early in the morning to avoid the heat.

On the way up, be sure to check out the lying buddha statue. You’ll see a giant White Budda statue at the top and have sweeping views of the city from here. Like any other temple in Vietnam, you should cover your knee and shoulder before entering the temple.

Dam Market

Dam Market is a large traditional market in Nha Trang and is a popular attraction and shopping destination in the city. The market has everything, both indoor and outdoor sections. You can find souvenirs, local specialities, clothing, luggages, handbags, and crocks at reasonable prices.

I used Grab Bike to Dam Market. The road to the main entrance of the market is lined with fruits and juice shops. You can buy cheap fresh juices such as oranges, pineapple, and mango for 15k. For shopping inside the market, Be sure to bargain to have the best deals.

Po Nagar Cham tower

Po Nagar Cham tower is one of the stunning ruins of Cham kingdom in Central Vietnam. It’s a must see historical and cultural attraction in Nha Trang. Central Vietnam including Nha Trang was part of Cham Kingdom from 2-14th century before integrated into Dai Viet (Vietnam) in the 14th century.

The Po Nagar Cham tower is located 2 km away north of the city center. You can buy a ticket at the entrance. It has typical Cham architecture with red brick towers. This Hindu temple is located right next to the Cai River, offering amazing views of the city and the sea.

You can spend an hour here exploring different towers and relaxing at one of its many shaded seating areas (important during the hot day).

Hon Chong Promontory

Hon Chong Promontory is a lovely natural rock formation located at the southern end of Hon Chong Beach, which is the second popular beach in Nha Trang apart from Tran Phu Beach.

Hon Chong Beach is best to visit at sunset, also its most popular time. You can watch the sunset and enjoy the views of the sea and the city. You can climb between big rocks for views and photos. It reminds me of Hin Ta Hin Yai in Koh Samui’s Lamai.

You buy a ticket at the entrance. It was sunset time, so it was a bit crowded. I also walked a bit outside of Hon Chong Promontory all the way to Hon Chong Beach.

Tran Phu Beach

Tran Phu beach is Nha Trang’s main beach. It’s a great place for swimming, sunbathing, and exercising. There are many parks with coconut trees running along the whole length of the beach.

The most popular time to go to Tran Phu beach is sunrise and sunset. These times are cooler than midday, so lots of locals and tourists gather at the beach for swimming and watch the sun going up and down. During mid-day, you’ll see mostly foreign tourists at the beach.

Along Tran Phu Beach, you can visit April 2nd Square square with its Tram Huong tower. You can go inside the tower during the day time. They have a showroom displaying local specialities such as agarwood, and edible bird’s nest.

At night, the beach also has several vibrant beach bars to explore such as Sailing Club Nha Trang, z-beach, or Lousiane Brewhouse. You can shop at the night market right next to the beach for clothing, crocks, and local souvenirs.

I had a nice dinner at the Restaurant Cilantro. I think it is a delicious and reasonably priced restaurant in central Nha Trang. I recommend checking it out if you are on Hung Vuong Street.

Day 2 (option 1): Island hopping, snorkeling, and scuba diving

Nha Trang is known for its beautiful sandy beaches. You can simply just relax or swim at the long beach in the city center along Tran Phu Beach. Lots of hotels have their beach facilities here such as sunbeds and umbrellas for their guests. The beach is often packed with people in the early morning and late afternoon when the sunlight is less intense.

In addition to the lively Tran Phu Beach, you can check out more quieter beaches such as Doc Let Beach or Bai Dai Beach, which is 20 minutes drive south of the downtown area.

Nha Trang has many small islands off the mainland. You can consider taking an island hopping tour where you can visit several islands in one day. Popular islands on this tour include Hon Mieu, Hon Mun, Hon Tam, Hon Tre, and Hon Yen.

You can easily book boat tours that take you to multiple islands within a day trip. Be mindful reading their tour description before you book it. Some tours have a party/ backpackers vibe, some tours focus more on smoking and diving. Some tours include lunch and a mud bath.

Day 2 (option 2): Monkey Island and Ba Ho Waterfall

Since these two attractions are located in the same direction from the city center of Nha Trang, you can combine visiting them within a day. If you want a more relaxing pace, visit them within different days. Each of them deserve half to full day for exploration.

Unlike multiple island hopping tours, Monkey Island and Ba Ho Waterfall can be done easily by yourself by using grab. It might be difficult to get Grab back to the city center, but there are plenty of local taxis around these areas.

Monkey Island

Monkey island, as its name suggests, is the island of wild monkeys. You’ll see monkeys everywhere, inside the forest, along the beach, roaming free on the road, and jumping the cliffs into their pools.

You can buy food to feed them. It’s a good spot for animal lovers and families with kids. There are also beaches for swimming and relaxing. You can find tourist facilities on the island such as restaurants, cafes, and souvenir shops.

I took GrabBike to get to Long Phu wharf (Bến tàu du lịch Long Phú) to get to Monkey island. It was quite a long ride, 30 minutes on a motorbike. But the driver was friendly and offered to take me back to the city center when I finished my excursion.

I bought a ticket at a Ticket Booth at the Pier. They also have a combo for other islands too, but I only buy a ticket to Monkey island. The ticket includes two way high speed canoes, and some free uses of facilities on the island such as sunbeds and chairs. It doesn’t include food and drink.

I was surprised that there were a lot of monkeys on the island. They’re roaming everywhere, on the road, in the forest. They swim in the pool, even jump from the cliffs to the pool. Just don’t feed them with your hand as some monkeys are very aggressive.

The animal (dog/monkey) circus show was the highlight of the visit. It is only scheduled for a few times a day, so be sure to check the current timetable if you want to watch it.

Ba Ho Waterfall

Ba Ho waterfall is a beautiful natural waterfall inside the thick forest, which is a great place for swimming, hiking, and climbing in the jungle. It’s 20 minutes drive from the pier to Monkey island and around 1 hour drive from the city center of Nha Trang.

I was doubtful when I was thinking about whether to visit Ba Ho waterfall or not since it’s in a tourist managed area and the ticket is high compared to Vietnamese standard, 200k for a normal ticket. But after visiting, I highly recommend it for nature lovers and hikers.

It has three natural swimming pools and waterfalls between big rocks. To reach these pools, you need to climb over the rocks with support of the rope. I saw the kids doing it, so everyone can do it, just be careful and follow the signs along the road.

It is very peaceful swimming in the natural pool in the shaded area of the forest, no road traffic, just nature sound and a few people around.

The area also has many thrilled games activities for families and groups of friends to play. There are sky walks, zip lines, cycling in the sky… The park is well maintained with restaurants, toilets, pool, and tourist shops along the trail.

Day 3: Hon Tre island and Vinwonders themed park

Hon Tre island is the biggest island in all of the islands of Nha Trang. It is home to big brand resorts like Vinpearl and Mariiot. It is also the location of Vinwonders themed park and Vin Harbor, so you can spend a day here to just explore this complex. You can consider staying at Vinpearl resort, especially if you travel as a couple or with children.

I had experience staying in Hon Tre island and visited Hon Tre island for Vinwonder themed park. I would recommend spending at least a day on this island to explore Vinwonder and its harbor.

You can use the cable car or speed boat to get to Hon Tre island, around a 10 minute ride away. Taking a cable car ride is a must, to enjoy stunning views of Nha Trang city and the island.

I stayed in Vinpearl resort, so this transport is free to use. I used a cable car to get to the island and the speedboat to get back to the land as I wanted to experience both ways. The reception offered to transport my luggage separately.

On the second visit, the cable car ticket was also included in the combo ticket. Within a day in Vinwonders, you can explore the waterpark with dozens of games and activities, thrilling rides, explore the zoo and tropical gardens, and take the ride on the ferry wheel.

You can book an all-inclusive package here which includes a buffet for three meals breakfast, lunch, and dinner. My booking only includes the buffet breakfast. The Menu in the room is quite expensive though but you can find places to eat near Vin Harbor. Overall, It is great for a relaxing getaway in Nha Trang.

If you’re into hiking: Angel Mountain and Hoang Nguu Son

Nha Trang is not only known for its beach and entertainment activities, it also has many hiking opportunities. The two most famous ones are Angel Mountain and Hoang Nguu Son. If you ask locals about the best hiking destinations in Nha Trang, they’ll tell you to go to these two places.

Angel mountain is located close to the city, so it’s more popular than Hoang Nguu Son. You can hike Angel Mountain alone but it’s best to have a companion to hike Hoang Nguu Son.

Angel Mountain has three peaks, offering stunning views of the city, the beaches, and mountains. It has some rock climbing and best to explore early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat.

I did hike the three peaks within 3 hours both up and down, starting at 3pm and fishing at 6pm. I reached the last peak by sunset, and I recommend wearing a good shoe when hiking at this mountain.

Consider adding a half/ full day for mud bath

A mud bath is one of the activities and attractions that Nha Trang is known for. There are several well-known places to do these activities around the city. You can choose Thap Ba, 100 Egg Mud Bath, and I-Resort. The experience can range from one hour or a day depending how you want to relax.

These are my recommendations for 2 to 3 days in Nha Trang. I believe that two to three days is enough time to see most major cultural sights and enjoy the beach activities like swimming, snorkeling, diving, or island hopping. You can try local seafood, browse the night market, and check out several beach bars.
