Should you visit Mui Ne or Da Lat?

Da Lat and Mui Ne are two popular tourist destinations in South Vietnam, near Ho Chi Minh City. Da Lat is a mountain city known for its cool weather, stunning natural landscapes, rich cultural attractions, and French colonial architecture.

Mui Ne is a small beach town known for its beaches, windsurfing activities, Sahara-like sand dunes, colorful fishing villages, and some historical attractions related to Cham people.

In this article, I will compare Mui Ne and Da Lat to help you decide which city is better for your visit. I visited both places, so I can give you some recommendations based on my personal experiences.

Is it better to stay in Mui Ne or Da Lat?

I personally prefer visiting Da Lat more. It’s actually one of my favorite places to visit in Vietnam. I love the city due to its cool fresh mountain climate, peaceful atmosphere, great food, winding roads, as well as stunning natural and cultural attractions.

Da Lat is much bigger than Mui Ne, so it has more things to do and see. It has an international airport, making it easily accessible by air.

Mui Ne is a great place to visit if you want a beach weekend getaway from Ho Chi Minh city or you’re traveling around Vietnam. It’s a small town with good beach resorts, seafood restaurants, nice beachfront cafes, some natural attractions, and water activities such as windsurfing.

If you are first-timers to Vietnam, and you need to choose between Da Lat and Mui Ne, I would recommend visiting Da Nang first. If your time is allowed, you can visit both places as they’re located just 4-5 drive apart.

Both destinations are great for weekend getaway or relaxation. But for exploration, it usually takes a day to see most things in Mui Ne, while in Da Lat, you will need multiple days to explore its famous attractions and food.

In Da Lat, I like wandering around the city center, visiting the huge Xuan Huong Lake, Lam Vien Square, and beautiful parks with colorful flowers. It has charming French-inspired buildings such as the Cathedral or Train Station, and unique architecture like the Crazy House.

The city also has a great food scene with street food stalls at night markets as well as many cool restaurants and cafes with beautiful settings overlooking the valleys and lush pine forests.

You can also rent a scooter or take a grab to get to attractions such as cable car ride to the peaceful Truc Lam Zen Monastery, to Bao Dai Summer Palace, or Linh Phuoc pagoda.

There are dozens of natural attractions and plantations in the countryside of Da Lat, and if you want to explore these places, it’s best to take a guided tour. One day sightseeing tours will take you to famous waterfalls, coffee plantations, scenic temples, ethnic villages, or flower gardens.

In Mui Ne, within a half day or full day jeep tour, you can see major sights such as the White Sand Dunes, Red Sand Dunes, Mui Ne fishing village, and the Fairy stream.

Both Da Lat and Mui Ne are great places to visit for outdoor activities. Outdoor activities in Da Lat are mountain activities such as hiking, kayaking on the lake, canyoning, white water rafting, and riding a thrilling coaster.

In Mui Ne, you can explore beaches and sand dunes activities such as driving ATV on the sand dunes, swimming, windsurfing, kite surfing.

In terms of Buddhist temples, I recommend visiting Linh Phuoc pagoda, Linh An pagoda, and Linh Son pagoda. These are peaceful spiritual places that have beautiful architecture and stunning views.

Linh Son is located right at the heart of Da Lat. Linh Phuoc and Linh An are located in the countryside. Linh Phuoc has several buildings and stunning architecture decorated with pottery, glass, and porcelain.

Linh An pagoda is home to a large lady buddha statue where you can climb to the top shoulder of the Buddha. It’s overlooking the powerful Elephant Waterfalls.

The history of Dalat began from 1893 when the French explorer Alexandre Yersin discovered the city. He suggested The French government built a resort town with mansions and villas here due to its mild weather similar to Europe.

In the mid 20th century, Da Lat served as the summer residence for the last emperor of Vietnam, Bao Dai, adding to its royal significance.

Today, many French-style buildings still exist in the city as well as the summer palaces of Bao Dai. You can visit these places to learn more about the history of the city.

The most famous waterfalls to visit in Da Lat are the Datanla waterfall, Pongour Falls, and Elephant Waterfalls. Datanla waterfall is the closest falls to the city center, where you can try the ride on alpine coasters and activities such as canyoning and ziplining.

Pongour Falls is the most breathtaking multi-tiered waterfall, and one of the most beautiful falls in Vietnam. You can do a short hike to the falls from the parking area. Great place for photos.

Elephant Waterfalls is located close to the beautiful Linh An pagoda. It’s a powerful water flow where you can walk down the falls.

Historical Influences

History of the name “Mui Ne” and “Da Lat”

Mui Ne is used as a shelter for fishing boats whenever the fishermen encounter storms at sea. “Mui” means “nose” or “cape” in Vietnamese which refer to the high rocky promontory in the area, and “Ne” means to avoid or take refuge.

According to another legend, it was named after the youngest daughter of a Cham king named “Ne”. She suffered from a serious illness at 16, so a temple was built here on Hon Rom on the cape, so locals called the area Mui Ne.

Da Lat means “the river of the Lat people”. The Da Lach river used to run through the city. Da means “water, river or stream” in the language of K’ho (Lach) people.

Lat (also written as, Lach, M’Lates) is the original hill tribe that lived in the area before the French built the city into a resort town during the French colonial period.

Early origins

You can get a sense of the origins of these places from their names. Mui Ne was known as Panduranga, which was part of the Champa Kingdom. This Kingdom occupied most of Central Vietnam from the 2nd to 15th century.

In 1471, the Emperor Lê Thánh Tông of Dai Viet (now Vietnam) launched a campaign against Champa, seizing its capital, Vijaya. The Dai Viet King only emerged from the land north of Cu Mong Pass to Thu Bon River into Daviet.

There is south Cu Mong pass divided into 3 vassal states under Dai Viet rules to ensure they remained weak. These include Nam Ban (Tay Nguyen today), Kauthara (Phu Yen today), and Panduranga (Ninh Thuan – Binh Thuan, including Mui Ne).

Panduranga was the last principality of the Champa Kingdom. It existed as a vassal state (Trấn Thuận Thành) until 1832, when Nguyen  Emperor Minh Mạng officially fully annexed Vietnam.

So, Mui Ne was officially part of Dai Viet in 1832. Today, you can see ruins of Cham Kingdom around the area such as the 8th-century Po Sah Inu Cham Towers, built to worship Shiva.

The modern history of Da Lat dating back to the 19th century when Dr. Alexandre Yersin found the area in 1983 and advised the French colonial administrator to build a resort station here to escape from the heat of the coastal and major cities like Saigon.

Before becoming a French colonial resort town, Da Lat was the land of hill tribe people called Lach people.

French Colonial period (1858-1954)

The French built infrastructure in Da Lat to transform it into a Little Paris. They built European villas, hotels, churches, artificial Xuan Huong Lake, and the train station to connect the city with coastal cities and Saigon.

Many French colonial style buildings still stand in Da Lat today, many of them were converted into tourist attractions. You can visit Da Lat old train station, Bai Dai summer palaces, Dalat Palace, Dalat Palace Hotel

Mui Ne remained a quiet fishing village during the French colonial period. The French built the infrastructure in the nearby Phan Thiet city such as the 1908-built water tower.

American-Vietnam War

The highlight of Da Lat in the American war was the Tet Offensive when Viet Cong forces launched attacks on South Vietnamese and U.S. forces on 30 January 1968.

Today

Today, Mui Ne is a popular beach town near Saigon with lots of resorts, and water activities such as windsurfing and kitesurfing. The town also has beautiful sand dunes and ferry streams, and traditional fishing villages to explore.

Da Lat is a popular retreat for those who want to escape from the heat of the low lands. It has temperate weather, French-style architecture, and delicious food.

Cost of Living: Is Da Lat cheaper than Mui Ne?

Both cities have lower cost of living compared to major cities in Vietnam like Saigon or Ho Chi Minh City. I personally think that Da Lat is a bit more expensive than Mui Ne, in terms of accommodations and foods, especially in the touristy and central area.

If you are expats or long time travelers, you might be able to find cheaper long term rooms or apartments. But in general, for short term visitors and tourists in the central area, it’s slightly more expensive than Mui Ne.

Weather

Both cities have two main seasons, the dry season (November to April) and the rainy season (May to October). Mui Ne has warm temperatures all year round, while Da Lat, located high in the mountain, has a winter with cold temperatures.

If you want to maximize your outdoor activities, it’s best to visit this place in the winter season. When you’re traveling into the rainy season, you can benefit from fewer tourists, cheaper prices for accommodations, but the sky is not always bright and sunny.

There are risks of flooding and storms in both cities in the peak rainy season.

Getting Around

You can consider renting a scooter, take a guided tour with transportation, or use easy rider services to explore each place.

If you rent a scooter, make sure to be careful with the road in Da Lat. It’s a mountain city with many winding steep roads, and it’s dangerous for novice drivers.

Riding services such as Grab are available in both Da Lat and Mui Ne. It’s an Uber-like app in the western countries. You can use this app for a short distance in the city center.

Be mindful that these services only work in the city center and it can be difficult to get a ride from the countryside, so make sure to arrange your transport well in advance.

There are dozens of tours in Da Lat and Mui Ne that include both sightseeing tours and outdoor adventure tours. You can consider taking these tours which help to reduce stress from transportation.

In Da Lat, I took one full day of tours, which took me to some major attractions outside of the city center such as Datanla, Pongour, and Elephant falls, as well as several farms, and the ethnic village.

In Mui Ne, I took the half day sunset jeep tour, which took me to the White Sand Dunes, red sand dune, Fairy stream, and the fishing village. These are iconic attractions of Mui Ne.

If you’re with families or a group of friends, you can consider hiring a private driver, which is affordable and gives you more freedom to explore at your own pace.

So, you have it, my comparison between Mui Ne and Da Lat. Overall, Da Lat is a better choice if you want a mountain city with a peaceful atmosphere, good food, and with a wide range of activities such as hiking, exploring waterfalls, coffee plantations, night markets, and beautiful temples.

Mui Ne is a better place to visit if you want a beach holiday with activities such as windsurfing, kitefishing, exploring some natural attractions like the fairy stream and the sand dunes.
