Mui Ne or Nha Trang, which is better?

Mui Ne and Nha Trang are two beautiful beach towns in South central Vietnam. Nha Trang is a bigger and more popular city known for its wide range of resorts, tourist amenities, and activities.

Mui Ne is a small town with good surfing beaches and some beautiful natural attractions such as the sand dunes and fairy stream.

In this article, I will compare Mui Ne and Nha Trang, based on their locations, beaches, nightlife, shopping, attractions, and food. I’m Vietnamese and have traveled to both places, so I hope to share some useful insights from my personal experience and local knowledge.

Is it better to stay in Mui Ne or Nha Trang?

I enjoyed my stay in both Mui Ne and Nha Trang. Mui Ne has a small town vibe with beautiful beach cafes, seafood restaurants, and lots of cultural attractions. Nha Trang is a bigger city with a wider range of tourist amenities, cultural attractions, and island hopping.

Generally speaking, Nha Trang is better than Mui Ne if you want a bigger city atmosphere with good combinations of beaches, nightlife scene, shops, food, and island tours. It has an airport, making it easily reached from bigger cities in Vietnam such as Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh city.

If you want a family-friendly beach town with lots of activities and entertainment for your kids, Nha Trang is a better option. Additionally, the city is known for its mud baths, which are great places to relax and unwind.

Mui Ne is better than Nha Trang if you want a small beach holiday with some beautiful natural attractions like the Sand Dunes and Fairy Stream, and great kite surfing spots. It’s close to Ho Chi Minh City, making it a great weekend getaway from the hustle and bustle of the big city.

If you have time, you can visit both Nha Trang and Mui Ne. They are just around 3.5 hours drive away. On my journey around Vietnam, I traveled from Ho Chi Minh City, to Mui Ne, then Dalat, and Nha Trang all by road.

Location and How to Get There

Mui Ne Nha Trang
Mui Ne Nha Trang

Mui Ne and Nha Trang are located in South Central Vietnam. Mui Ne is closer to Ho Chi Minh City, only 200km away. Mui Ne is around 220km south of Nha Trang, around 3-4 hours by bus.

Nha Trang is a bigger and more developed city with an international airport, making it easier to reach. The direct flight from Nha Trang to either Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi is around 1-1.5 hours.

Mui Ne does not have an airport, so you can only reach the city by road. There are long distance buses from Ho Chi Minh City to Mui Ne. The bus journey is around 3-4 hours.

If you want to take the train, you need to get off at its closest station which is Phan Thiet Station, 25 km away. From Phan Thiet train station, you can get a taxi to Mui Ne.

You can also reach Nha Trang by bus. The bus journey from Ho Chi Minh to Nha Trang is around 5-6 hours. Nha Trang has its own train station, so you can also reach the city by train. Traveling by train is a favorite way of getting around Vietnam for many foreign tourists.

Accommodations

Both Nha Trang have a wide range of accommodations, including budget family-run guest houses and big chain resorts. Nha Trang is a more popular tourist destination, so it has better choices of luxury international brand accommodations.

The accommodations in Mui Ne are centered around a compact area along Nguyen Dinh Chieu and Huynh Thuc Khang street in Ham Tien ward. Most accommodations are in the form of low-rise buildings.

The accommodations in Nha Trang are scattered around the city center, on Tran Phu, and Hon Chong Beach. There are dozens of high rise hotels and apartment-style resorts in Nha Trang with rooftop bars and infinity pools with stunning views of the city’s skyscrapers and the sea.

If you want luxury and more secluded private beaches, you can head out to the nearby islands such as Hon Tre and Hon Tam islands.

These places are home to 5-star luxury resorts such as Vinpearl or Marriott Resort. To reach Hon tre island, you can take the cable over to the beach, which is stunning.

Nightlife

Both Nha Trang and Mui Ne have lively nightlife. As the more developed city, the nightlife in Nha Trang is more lively with wider selections of bars, night clubs, restaurants, and night markets. It also has lovely beach bars and rooftop bars to explore.

The nightlife in Nha trang is centered around the main streets of the city center, a few blocks away from Tran Phu beach. Many people also hang out at the beachfront, 3 April Square. There is a small night market where you can buy some cute souvenirs and snacks.

The nightlife in Mui Ne is chill and relaxing with some beautifully decorated bars, cafes, and seafood restaurants along the beachfront. Mui Ne has some trendy beach cafes, which attract lots of people during the sunset time such as the Pineapple bar.

I recommend checking Dong Vui Food Court, which contains several restaurants and a bar where you can try various dishes including Vietnamese and international dishes. It’s cheap and delicious, so make sure to visit.

Shopping

As a bigger city, Nha Trang is a better place to go for shopping. The city has several modern shopping malls and a huge market where you can find almost everything from luxury products to local specialties.

There are several malls concentrated in the city center areas including Vincom Plaza and Vincom Center on Tran Phu street, as well as Gold Coast Mall, and Lotte Mart. These malls have a good range of mid-range and luxury goods.

For affordable souvenirs and local specialties, you can check out Nha Trang Night Market Dam Market. Dam Market is a huge market with many sections such as clothing, accessories, food, vegetable, and dry goods. It’s a fun place for bargain shopping.

Mui Ne has some small tourist shops and a market in Ham Tien district. This is a good place to check out to experience local daily life.

Food

Both places are coastal cities, so they are known for fresh seafood dishes. If you’re a sea food lover, these are great cities to check out. Both places have trendy and stylish restaurants and cafes.

The prices for food and drinks in two cities are quite similar, and are generally cheaper than Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city.

I had good meals at Restaurant Cilantro on Hung Vuong street in Nha Trang, and great grilled fish in Dong Vui foot court on Nguyen Dinh Chieu street in Mui Ne.

Cultural Attractions

Both cities are great places to visit ancient Cham ruins, but generally, Nha Trang has more cultural attractions to explore.

Mui Ne has a small Cham tower called Po Sah Inu Cham Towers, and Nha Trang has more impressive Cham ruins called Po Nagar Temple. These ancient towers are remnants of the Cham civilization, which inhabited South Central Vietnam.

Additionally, Nha Trang is home to a buddhist temple Long Son Pagoda, which is known for its giant Buddha statue. You can climb to the top for stunning views of the city.

The Nha Trang Cathedral is also a must-see attraction in Nha Trang. It’s located on the hill, has beautiful architecture and views of the city. If you want to learn about marine life, you can check out the National Oceanographic Museum.

In Mui Ne, you can visit Mui Ne fishing village, where you can see colorful round boats, local fishing and trading for their fresh catches along the sea. It’s also a charming place to take photos.

Within 60 km away from Mui Ne, you can visit Ta Cu Mountain, which is a great place to take the cable car, hike, and check out beautiful temples and Buddha statues.

Outdoor Activities/ Day Trips

Both cities have lots of outdoor activities to explore. The common outdoor activities between them are the beaches. You can swim, enjoy watersport activities, sunbathing, or watching the sunset.

Nha Trang has more classic watersport activities such as jet skiing, parasailing, kayaking, paddle boarding, snorkeling, and diving. The main watersport in Mui Ne is kite surfing.

In Mui Ne, you can explore the White Sand Dune, and the red sand dunes. There are activities such as dune surfing and Quad Biking ATV driving. You can sit behind a driver to enjoy the ride on the sand or rent one to do it by yourself.

You can take along walk on barefoot along the Fairy Stream, with the shade of trees on both sides and views of colorful rock formations. This is a peaceful experience to try.

In Nha Trang, you can take day trips to many islands nearby which offer more pristine white sandy braces for snorkeling and diving. I visited Monkey island and loved it. There are hundreds of wild monkeys roaming free on the island, and there are good animal shows to watch.

You can also take the cable ride above the sea to visit Hon Tre island. This island is home to Vinwonders themed park with lots of games and activities for both children and adults.

Mud Baths

Nha Trang is home to some of Vietnam’s best mud baths. These places are great for healing and relaxing, so make sure these mud baths are places to relax and unwind.

Some popular mud baths in Nha Trang are the Thap Ba Hot Springs & Mud Bath and I-Resort Nha Trang. Make sure to bring the swimwear with you and book in advance if you’re visiting in the high season.

Cost of Living

Both Mui Ne and Nha Trang generally have lower cost of living compared to bigger cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city. The affordable cost of living and beach life are some of the reasons these places attract lots of expats and long term travelers.

Between Mui Ne and Nha Trang, they have similar cost of living. I paid a similar amount of money for food, drinks, and accommodations in Mui Ne main area and Nha trang City Center. If you venture outside of the tourist areas of both places, you can find cheaper prices.

Weather

Both Nha Trang and Mui Ne have warm weather all year round. They have two seasons, the rainy season and the dry season. The dry season in these two cities is often longer than Da Nang in Central Vietnam. You can have more months enjoying outdoor activities.

Both cities can experience flooding and typhoons in the peak rainy months, from September to December, so make sure to check the weather when traveling to this region during this period.

Getting Around

You can rent a scooter, use local taxis, and ride share services such as Grab taxi and Grab Bike in Mui Ne and Nha trang. Nha Trang is a bigger city so it’s easier to request a Grab ride both night and day.

You can walk in the city center of Mui Ne and Nha Trang. If you are tired of the heat, you can always order a grab ride. Grab only works a short distance. If you need to explore sights outside of the city, you can consider taking a tour or hire a private driver.

In Mui Ne, I took a jeep tour that took me to the most popular attractions in the city such as the White Sand Dunes, Red Sand Dunes, Mui Ne fishing village, and the Fairy Stream.

To get to Ta Cu Mountain, which is located 60km away from Mui Ne, I hired a private driver. My hotel’s owner helped me to hire one, he drove me there, waited for me to explore, then drove me back to the hotel. It costs 1 million VND two ways and waiting hours (around 40usd).

In Nha Trang, I used a Grab Bike to explore most parts in and around the city center. I used it to get to Long Son temple, Nha Trang Cathedral, Dam Market, Po Nagar Temple, and Hon Chong.

For further attractions such as Monkey Island (15km away), I was still able to get a Grab Bike. The driver was friendly and drove me to the pier. He told me that when I’m ready to return, I can call him about 30 minutes before leaving, and he’ll come pick me up. He only charges the standard Grab fare.

To get to Hon Tre island with Hon Tre island to visit VinWonders, stay at Vinperl resort, I took a Grab Car to the pier, and the cable car to the island. On the island, I explore on foot and by resort’s golf cart.

So you have it, my comparison between Mui Ne and Nha Trang. In conclusion, Nha Trang is the better option if you want the convenience of the big city life with good nightlife, shopping, and various beaches and island tours.

Mui Ne is a better option if you want a small beach town vibe, a relaxing beach weekend getaway from Ho Chi Minh city, or you are interested in the picture-postcard sand dunes and fairy stream. It’s also a great destination for kite surfing.
