Ninh Binh and Hoi An are two popular tourist destinations in Vietnam. Ninh Binh is known for its beautiful natural attractions with rivers, limestone mountains, and caves. Hoi An is known for its ancient town with old wooden houses, tailor shops, historic temples, and museums.
In this article, I will compare between Ninh Binh and Hoi An, to help you decide which city is better for your visit. I will share my opinion about their similarities and differences in some aspects like location, natural attractions, cultural attractions, nightlife, shopping, and food.
I’m Vietnamese and have traveled to both places, so I can give us some useful recommendations based on the local experiences.
Is it better to stay in Ninh Binh or Hoi An?
I would recommend visiting if you enjoy the beautiful natural landscape and escape from the hustle and bustle of the capital city, Hanoi. Ninh Binh is known for its striking limestone mountains, peaceful rivers, caves, and mountain goats.

It’s lots of outdoor activities such as hiking to Hang Mua, cycling around the countryside, exploring the rice terraces, and boat ride at Trang An and Tam Coc. The city also has some beautiful temples to explore such as Bich Dong temple or Bai Dinh temple.
I believe that Hoi An is the better place to visit if you want to experience the historic old town with ancient temples, old wooden houses, museums, lantern lit streets, or take the unique coconut boat ride.
Hoi An is known for its tailor shops where you can get some clothes tailor made at reasonable prices within one or two days. If you’re planning to make custom suits or dresses, Hoi An is a better place to go.
Additionally, the city is close to An Bang and Hoi An Beach, which makes it perfect for enjoying beach activities alongside cultural and historical attractions.
Location is also an important factor when deciding whether to visit Ninh Binh or Hoi An. Ninh Binh is located in North Vietnam, which is a more ideal day trip and overnight trip from cities in the northern region such as Hanoi.
Hoi An, located in Central Vietnam, makes it a more ideal place for day trips or overnight trips from nearby cities in the central region such as Da Nang or Hue.
Hoi An is only a 45 minutes taxi ride from Da Nang, where you can explore many more attractions such as Han River, My Khe Beach, Dragon Bridge, Han market, Marble Mountains, and Ba Na Hill and the Golden Bridge.
You can also consider the weather factor when choosing between these two places. If you’re planning to visit these places from September to November, I think it’s better to visit Ninh Binh because Hoi An often has storms and flooding during this period.
If you travel around Vietnam, you can put them in the itinerary for one single trip. You can take a train to travel between two places. Along the train journey, you can stop at other cities in between such as Phong Nha cave, Hue, and Da Nang.

This street is lined with restaurants, bars, supermarkets, massage places, and beauty salons. Some bars are open quite late until early morning.

Hoi An, in my opinion, is the better place to go for shopping. The city has a wider range of shops and markets for souvenirs, handicrafts, and custom clothing.
