October is autumn in North Vietnam. It is a transition month from the rainy and hot summer season to the cool and dry winter season. The weather is cool with lots of sunshine and clear skies. Temperature is around 26°C.

South Vietnam has warm weather all year round, and October is the last month of the rainy season in the South (typically from May to October). The rain is less intense than previous months and the temperature is around 28°C.

In my experience, October is one of the best months to visit Vietnam, especially in the North and South. These regions are at the end of the rainy season, so you will have many sunny days, less rainfall, and mild weather.

October is one of the best times to visit Hanoi, Halong Bay, Ninh Binh, Sapa, and Ha Giang in North Vietnam. It is also a great time to explore Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong delta, and Phu Quoc in South Vietnam.

October is not the best month to visit Central Vietnam. Places like Da Nang, Hue, and Hoi An are still in the peak rainy season. These cities can experience high rainfall with occasional storms and floods. So, keep an eye on the weather forecast if you visit this region in October to avoid interruption. 

What to wear in Vietnam in october? 

North Vietnam can be chilly at night, so be sure to bring a light jacket with you. South Vietnam has warm weather and good places to go for beaches, bring breathable clothes and some swimsuits if you want to swim. Also carry umbrellas and raincoats with you as all regions are still in the rainy season.

Hanoi is one of the top destinations to visit in North Vietnam in October. This month has great weather conditions for sightseeing and outdoor activities. Temperature ranges from 20°C to 27°C with lots of sunshine and the sunlight is less intense. 

This month marks the end of the rainy season in Hanoi, so the rainfall is less than previous months. You can enjoy exploring the city in mild and pleasant weather.

For Hanoian, this is a romantic month in the city as it is the autumn foliage season. The leaves turn to yellow colors and create a picturesque atmosphere on many streets. Places like Phan Dinh Phung street attracts lots of local girls wearing traditional Ao Dai who come to take photos.

October is perfect time to wandering around the old quarter and visit ancient attractions such as  

The Temple of Literature and Tran Quoc pagoda, as well as ancient streets such as Hang Ma, Hang Bac, Hang Dau, and Hang Gai.

You can take a stroll around Hoan Kiem Lake, visit Hoa Loa prison, Thang Long imperial palace, the train street, or Ho Chi Minh mausoleum. You can go shopping for traditional Vietnamese handicrafts, try local food, drink egg coffees, and enjoy the nightlife at Ta Hien beer street.

As October is still in the rainy season, rain can occur, so I recommend bringing an umbrella or raincoat with you. Also bring a light jacket and long sleeve with you as it can also be chilly at night.

October is one of the best times to visit Sapa. This month has less rain, clear skies, and moderately mild weather, making it a good month for sightseeing and trekking. Temperature ranges from 15°C to 20°C. It can be cold in the early morning and evening, so be sure to bring a warm jacket with you.

I also recommend bringing a waterproof jacket with you because the town still experiences rainy and foggy weather. September and October are the harvest season. You can admire the beautiful golden rice terraces. 

You can go trekking, exploring different tribe hill villages such as Cat Cat village, Lao Chai Village, and Ta Van Village. You can explore natural attractions such as Muong Hoa Valley, Fansipan Mountain, Heaven Gate, and Ham Rong Mountain.

Similar to other parts of North Vietnam, October is the end of the rainy season, so you’ll have plenty of sunny days and little rain. This is one of the great months to visit Ninh Binh.

You can take a boat ride on Trang An to explore beautiful caves, ancient temples, and stunning limestone mountains. Alternatively, you can consider taking a boat ride on Tam Coc, which also has beautiful scenery of scenic karst pillars, rice paddies, and Ngo Dong River.

Additionally, you can explore the Hoa Lu ancient capital, visiting Bich Dong pagoda, and Bai Dinh pagoda. You can rent a bicycle to explore the countryside, try local foods, and enjoy the nightlife in Tam Coc. Consider staying in a homestay for more authentic experience.

4. Ha Giang

Like other cities in Far North Vietnam, Ha Giang has mild weather in October with cool weather, clear skies, and occasional light showers. This is a great month for exploring the loop on motorbike.

You can take easy ride tours to enjoy the breathtaking landscape of the loop. You can explore the rice terraces, waterfalls, caves, and stunning view points. You can try local food, learn more about the local culture of ethnic minority groups, and stay in traditional homestays.

Some famous attractions along Ha Giang Loop are Ma Pi Leng Pass, Du Gia Waterfall, Dong Van Karst Plateau, Quan Ba Heaven Gate, and Lung Cu Flag Tower.

5. Ha Long Bay

With pleasant weather and clear skies, October is undoubtedly one of the best months to explore HaLong Bay. Temperature ranges from 25°C to 28°C and can drop at night. Pack both swimsuits and a light jacket with you.

The sea temperature is warm, which is perfect for water activities such as swimming and kayaking. You can explore the caves and visit floating villages. This is also a great time for a less tourist crowd as it is still not yet the peak travel season in Halong.

October marks the end of the rainy season in Ho Chi Minh City. The city still experiences hot and humid weather but less rains than previous months. Temperature ranges from 24°C to 31°C. 

The rain often occurs in the afternoon, and is gone after an hour or two, so you still have plenty of suny time to explore the city. Bring an umbrella or raincoat with you when going out.

You can explore the cultural and historical attractions, eat Vietnamese food, try Vietnamese iced coffee, do some shopping, and enjoy the nightlife.

Major tourist attractions in Saigon are the Ben Thanh market, War museum, Independence Palace, Bui Vien walking street, Nguyen Hue walking street, and Central Post Office. You can explore the vibrant Chinatown district 5 and visit the Thien Hau temple.

If you have time and are interested in the Vietnam-American war, you can take a trip to Cu Chi tunnels, which is an extensive underground system used in the war. For experiencing the floating market and river life, you can take a day tour to the Mekong delta.

7. Mui Ne

Mui Ne is a small beach town in South Vietnam, located only 3-4 hours drive from Ho Chi Minh City. This town has good weather in October with temperatures ranging from 24°C to 32°C. This is also the end of the rainy season, so the rainfall decreases compared to previous months.

You can stay in a nice beachfront resort along Nguyen Dinh Chieu street or opt for budget-friendly hotels for a more local experience. You can explore attractions such as the white sand dunes, the red sand dunes, the Fairy stream, and Mui Ne fishing village. 

If you have time, you can take a guided tour to Ta Cu mountain, which is a nice area where you can explore different temples and pagodas, and enjoy stunning views of the surrounding mountains and oceans.

8. Phu Quoc

October is a great time to visit Phu Quoc. This month is the end of the rainy season and indeed a budget-friendly month to explore this Pearl island. The peak tourist season starts from November to April. Temperature ranges from 25°C to 30°C, which is great for beach activities.

Famous beaches in Phu Quoc are Long Beach, Sao beach, and Khem Beach. Long Beach on the west coast is known for beach stunning sunset views and is lined with world-class beach resorts and hotels. Sao beach on the east coast is famous for its white sand and crystal clear water.

In addition to the beach, you can explore Sunset town, take a cable car ride to Hon Thom island, visit Phu Quoc prison and Ho Quoc pagoda. You can learn about the farming industries on the island by visiting a pearl farm, a pepper farm, and a fish sauce factory.

Don’t miss out on the night market in Duong Dong town. It is a great place to buy local specialities and try fresh seafood. If you don’t plan to buy anything, I still recommend a visit to experience local life.

9. Mekong Delta

October is a good month to explore the Mekong Delta. Even though it is a part of the rainy season, it marks the end and the rainfall is less than previous months. 

You can explore bustling river life, visit the floating markets, and explore ancient temples. You can try lots of tropical fruits and regional dishes. While you can take day trips from Ho Chi Minh City, you can consider staying in the region for more authentic experiences.

Famous cities on the Mekong delta are Can Tho, Ben Tre, My Tho, Chau Doc, Bac Lieu, and Tra Vinh.

10. Da Nang/ Hoi An

Central Vietnam, which includes Da Nang, Hoi An, and Hue, is in the peak rainy month in October. This region can experience floods and storms during this period. However, the weather can be unpredictable and different each year, so be sure to check the weather forecast before you go.

If you don’t mind the rain, you can find some great accommodations in Da Nang and Hoi An in October and November. It indeed still has many sunny days for exploration though.
